Schwetzingen is a city in the northwest of Baden-Wuerttemberg, about 10 kilometers to the west of Heidelberg (Germany). Her widely preserved baroque castle arrangement with park is noteworthy. The Schwetzinger palace garden is the only lock park of Europe, which is received still in its original, baroque plant.

    Mosque at Schwetzingen Castle garden
The mosque in the Schwetzinger "garden of the reason" impresses by his Monumentalität and makes clear the religious tolerance of the elector Carl-Theodor. It stands for a serious discussion with East and an enlightened world view. The mosque lies in the southern part of the castle park of Schwetzingen. To the east the arrangement with the Japanese cherry trees connects, to the west an artificial pond and built Mercury Tempel planned from the start as a ruin on an artificially aufgeschütteteten hill.

The 1785 mosque finished placed, which admits also as “red mosque” is, are too their time largest plant of Oriental style in the German-speaking countries and are located in the recent part of the Schwetzinger garden, the “Turkish garden”. The mosque has two minarets, one can not climb, however. On the outer walls - just as in the cover of the dome - stand Kalligraphien with verses from the holy Qur'an.

It is not known whether the architect Pigage of the mosque in the Schwetzingen Castle Park had visited ever even Islamic countries. But with security the various research and publications about mosques of the time were familiar to him.
