    The Speyer Cathedral is the largest remaining Romanesque church in the world. Builder of the church was the Emperor
    Conrad II, his goal was to build the biggest church in the world. Conrad II, the first Salian emperor on the throne,
    decided shortly after his coronation, on the banks of the Rhine, to build a cathedral. The largest dome of Christianity
    was to be built in the hitherto unimportant town of Speyer, a cathedral of unimaginable proportions. He laid the Foundation
    to 1027, the Cathedral was consecrated in 1061 under Henry the fourth, the grandson of the founder. Twenty years on,
    Henry IV, who had moved from Speyer to Canossa, in order to break away from the papal ban, making the cathedral from
    scratch. The cathedral is a model for many churches of the early Middle Ages.

    In the hall crypt, the nicest Lower church of the world, the salian emperors and Kings, Staufische and Habsburg rulers have
    their last resting found a whole dynasty, which determined the fate of Europe's 100 years. More than 5 centuries was the
    cathedral a steadfast witness of changeable times. Laid waste in 1689 set on fire and in 1794 from French revolutionary
    troops, the quite agreed demolition can be prevented in 1806 in the last second.

    All destruction and changes through the centuries and all tags despite: Der DOM zu Speyer is an impressive monument of
    Romanesque architecture, a unique testimony to medieval ideas, the most important legacy of the salian dynasty.
    The Speyer Cathedral was added in 1981 by UNESCO in the world heritage.

    Der Dom zu Speyer ist die größte erhaltene romanische Kirche der Welt. Bauherr der Kirche war Kaiser Konrad II., sein Ziel
    war es, die größte Kirche der Welt zu bauen. Kaum wer er gekrönt, hatte Konrad der Zweite, der erste Salier auf dem Kaiserthron,
    beschlossen, am Ufer des Rheins einen Dom zu erbauen. In dem bis dahin unbedeutenden Städtchen Speyer sollte der größte
    Dom der Christenheit entstehen, eine Kathedrale von unvorstellbaren Ausmaßen. Um 1027 legte er den Grundstein, geweiht wurde
    der Dom 1061 unter Heinrich dem Vierten, dem Enkel des Gründers. Zwanzig Jahre später lässt Heinrich der Vierte, der von Speyer
    aus nach Canossa gezogen war, um sich vom päpstlichen Bann zu lösen, den Dom völlig neu gestalten. Der Dom wird zum Vorbild
    zahlreicher Kirchenbauten des frühen Mittelalters.

    In der Hallenkrypta, der schönsten Unterkirche der Welt, haben die salischen Kaiser und Könige, Staufische und habsburgische
    Herrscher ihre letzte Ruhe gefunden, eine ganze Dynastie, die über 100 Jahre die Geschicke Europas bestimmte. Über 5 Jahrhunderte
    lang war der Dom ein unerschütterlicher Zeuge wechselhafter Zeiten. 1689 in Brand gesetzt und 1794 von französischen
    Revolutiontruppen verwüstet, kann 1806 der schon beschlossene Abriss in letzter Sekunde verhindert werden.

    Allen Zerstörungen und Veränderungen durch die Jahrhunderte hin und allen Umbauten zum Trotz: Der Dom zu Speyer ist ein
    eindrucksvolles Monument romanischer Baukunst, ein einzigartiges Zeugnis mittelalterlicher Vorstellungen, die bedeutendste
    Hinterlassenschaft der Salier. Der Speyerer Dom wurde von der UNESCO 1981 mit in das Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.
