The St. Nicholas Church at the Old Market, with its dome visible from all directions, the most striking buildings in the historic city of Potsdam.
After 1795 the old St. Nicholas Church was burned down in 1800 its reconstruction was planned. The foundation stone of the building planned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel
has been delayed until 1830.
After various planning ideas, had a central structure prevails, like a cube on a square base. Initially, only the base was completed.
Only later was joined by the dome roof. The four corner towers flanking the dome, were initially not planned, but had to be built for reasons of statics.

Die Nikolaikirche am Alten Markt ist mit ihrer aus allen Himmelsrichtungen sichtbaren Kuppel das wohl markanteste Gebäude, im historischen Stadtgebiet von Potsdam.
Nachdem 1795 die alte Nikolaikirche abgebrannt war, wurde 1800 ihr Wiederaufbau geplant. Die Grundsteinlegung des von Karl Friedrich Schinkel geplanten Bauwerks
verzögerte sich allerdings bis 1830.
Nach verschiedenen Planungsideen hatte sich ein Zentralbau durchgesetzt, der einem Kubus auf quadratischem Grundriss glich. Zunächst wurde nur der Unterbau fertiggestellt.
Erst später kam das Kuppeldach hinzu. Die vier Ecktürme, die die Kuppel flankieren, waren zunächst auch nicht geplant, mussten aber aus Gründen der Statik erbaut werden.
