Roskilde is the first Gothic cathedral from brick, the largest church of Scandinavia and the burial place of most Danish rulers.
The church was built in the year 1280 and since the year 1995 took up the Unesco the cathedral on the list of the world cultural heritage.
Over the years, were then within and outside the Church grown several chapels. These chapels were originally dedicated to saints,
but later grave chapels and mausoleums of kings were Replace the style of the time. On a walk around the cathedral, you can look

The famous queen Margarethe I. (was the most powerful ruler of Denmark, Norway and Sweden), wanted actually to be buried in

Differently than her predecessors and successors she got the Tomb not in the niche of a page, but as a sign of respect for their life
performance directly in front of the altar. To date, 21 Danish Kings and 17 Queens are interred in the Church.
For the descendants of the old Viking for the Danes today, the Roskilde Cathedral is a national monument. Thirty generations build on
this church, or visit them to the service to prove the last honour to her queens and kings.

Roskilde ist der erste gotische Dom aus Backstein, die größte Kirche Skandinaviens und die Grabstätte der meisten dänischen Herrscher.
Erbaut wurde die Kirche im Jahre 1280 und seit dem Jahre 1995 nahm die Unesco den Dom auf der Liste des Weltkulturerbes auf.
Im laufe der Jahre wurden dann innerhalb und außerhalb der Kirche mehrere Kapellen angebaut. Diese Kapellen wurden ursprünglich
Heiligen gewidmet, die aber später durch Grabkapellen und Mausoleen der Könige im Stil der Zeit ersetz wurden. Bei einem Gang um den Dom,
kann man auf 800 Jahre dänischer Baugeschichte zurückblicken.
Die berühmte Königin Margarethe I. (war die mächtigste Herrscherin von Dänemark, Norwegen und Schweden), wollte eigentlich in
der Klosterkirche begraben werden, in der der größte Teil ihrer Familie schon lag. Aber der Bischof von Roskilde ließ ihre Leiche in seinem
Dom beisetzen. Anders als ihre Vorgänger und Nachfolger bekam sie das Grabmal nicht in einer Seitennische, sondern als Zeichens des Respekts
für ihre Lebensleistung direkt vor dem Altar. Bis heute sind in dem Gotteshaus 21 dänische Könige und 17 Königinnen beigesetzt.
Für die Nachfahren der alten Wikinger, für die Dänen von heute ist der Dom von Roskilde ein nationales Denkmal. Seit dreißig Generationen
bauen sie an dieser Kirche, oder besuchen sie zum Gottesdienst, um ihren Königinnen und Königen die letzte Ehre zu erweisen.
