The Benedictine Abbey of Melk in Lower Austria near the town of Melk on the right bank of the Danube. The cloister rock is presumably already settled since the Roman's time. As a landmark of the Wachau it belongs to the UNESCO world heritage.
The splendid Abbey impresses above all by his very expressive architecture as well as the variety in art-historical wealth and counts to the most important baroque constructions of Europe. Already since the 11th century Milking the ecclesiastical and cultural centre of Lower Austria is, first as a castle Babenberger and then as a Benedictine's cloister. At the beginning of the 18th century the cloister was anew established after plans by Jakob Prandtauer. Shining climaxes are the marble hall and the library, about 100,000 volumes enclosed - some of it count to the most valuable written legacies of the Middle Ages.

"The name of the rose" reached the pencil, by the figure of the Adson from milking additional fame from Umberto Eco Roman. Beginning and end of the novel play at this place.

Das Benediktinerkloster Stift Melk liegt in Niederösterreich bei der Stadt Melk am rechten Ufer der Donau. Der Klosterfelsen ist vermutlich schon seit der Römerzeit besiedelt. Als Wahrzeichen der Wachau gehört es zum UNESCO-Welterbe.
Das prächtige Stift imponiert vor allem durch seine ausdrucksstarke Architektur sowie die Vielfalt an kunsthistorischem Reichtum und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Barockbauten Europas. Bereits seit dem 11. Jahrhundert ist Melk das geistliche und kulturelle Zentrum von Niederösterreich, zunächst als Babenbergerburg und dann als Benediktinerkloster. Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde das Kloster nach Plänen von Jakob Prandtauer neu errichtet. Glänzende Höhepunkte sind der Marmorsaal und die Bibliothek, die etwa 100.000 Bände umfasst - einige davon zählen zu den wertvollsten schriftlichen Hinterlassenschaften des Mittelalters.

Zusätzliche Bekanntheit erreichte das Stift, durch die Figur des Adson von Melk aus Umberto Ecos Roman "Der Name der Rose". Beginn und Ende des Romans spielen an diesem Ort.
