The hall on the upper floor of the New Wing completed in 1746, originally known as the Grand Gallery, is one of the most important creations of rococo interior design from the reign of Frederick the Great.

During one of the heaviest bombin raids on Berlin in the nicht from the 22nd to the 23rd of November 1943, the New Wing was almost completely destroyed. This led to the collapse of all the intermediate floors in the region of the “Golden Gallery” and the destruction of the majority of the marble stucco walls due to fire or collapse.

The “Golden Gallery” was restored in the period between 1961 and 1972, including the reconstruction of all the fixed decorative wall elements in accordance with the original design. The remaining fragments of the original stucco decoration could not be incorporated in the restoration due to the exteme heat of the fire which had completely destroyed the structure of the marble stucco. The reconstruction of this interior design work, carried out by a team of outstanding artists and craftsmen, was the high point of the restoration of the Charlottenburg Palace.

Der ursprünglich als „Große Galerie“ bezeichnete, 1746 fertiggestellte Saal im Obergeschoss des Neuen Flügels gilt als bedeutendste Raumschöpfung des friderizianischen Rokokos. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff erhielt noch im Jahr 1740, dem Jahr der Thronbesteigung Friedrichs II. den Auftrag zum Bau des Neuen Flügels.

Bei einer der schwersten Bombardierungen Berlins, in der Nacht vom 22. zum 23. November 1943, wurde u.a. der Neue Flügel fast vollständig zerstört. Danach waren im Bereich der „Goldenen Galerie“ alle Geschossdecken eingestürzt, die Stuckmarmor-Wände größtenteils verbrannt oder großflächig abgebrochen.

Die „Goldene Galerie“, wurde in den Jahren 1961 bis 1972 wiederhergestellt und dabei sämtliche wandfesten Dekorationen originalgetreu rekonstruiert. Eine Restaurierung des Raumes unter Belassung der noch vorhandenen Fragmente war nicht möglich, da der Stuckmarmor auf Grund der Hohen Temperaturen beim Brand des Schlosses in seinem Gefüge vollständig zerstört war. Die Rekonstruktion dieser Raumschöpfung durch hervorragende Künstler und Handwerker stellt den Höhepunkt der Wiederaufbauarbeiten am Schloss Charlottenburg dar.
