    Today a normal station operation is at the Friedrichstrasse station again. But the train station was no
    normal station for a long time. Until 1989, there were other sounds typical. The crack of the stamp with
    which the East German border inspectors passports and visas color-coded.

    At the very beginning of the hissing of the steam locomotives ruled the scene. On the 7th of February,
    1882 trains hold for the first time in the station which has at that time only two platforms. The station hall
    on the viaduct of the metropolitan railway, which pulls itself on 730 bricked sheets from east to west by
    Berlin to Charlottenburg, becomes as one first of electrical light illuminates. After the First World War it
    becomes clear that the station became too small for the crush.
    The national railway instructs Carl Theodor Brodführer with a rebuilding which lasts from 1919 to 1925.
    Since then there are six rails and a two-naved Hall.

    In 1923 follows the underground connection, the station in the today's U 6 is built 6.60 metres under
    street level in the marshy Spree shore. 1928, two tracks of light rail "electrified" - for the S-Bahn.
    On the most strongly frequented metropolitan railway station, which is used 1934 of more than 16.7 million
    passengers, also main line trains hold. 1939 one can travel from here to Moscow, Riga, Paris and Vienna.

    When the GDR closes the border in the morning of the 13th of August, 1961, only a few points must be inserted,
    then two terminal stations have originated. To obstruct the view, the border guards between the platform B
    (for the S-Bahn to the West) and the platform of C (for the S-Bahn to the East) have a glass wall built,
    which is again in 1989 to superfluous after the opening of the border. Since 2 July 1990, the S-Bahn on the light rail
    again drive between East and West.
